4.26.14 Last Weekends Vintage Finds

I barely had time to unload the van from Lincon, and it was Friday morning and time to hit the road again. I love my job :).  I only went to a couple of local sales.  The lady that sold me the metal side table had purchased it from me years ago.  Isn't that funny?  It is not the first thing that I have bought/sold more than once.

I gave the white step stool a vigorous sanding
that exposed great red and yellow paint.
I am using it as a plant stand in my
outdoor booth.

Flea market finds on Saturday.
The sweet oval girl litho probably lasted over
100 years in great condition.
I only owned it a few hours before I poked a hole in  it.
Sigh.

My favorite vintage find:
A folk art trinket box with star on top.

Close second:
Hand carved butter and bread cutting boards/
First time I've ever seen the butter.
I think it originally had a glass plate in it.
Bought for $7, sold for $43 on ebay.

4.24.14 Junkin' Buying Trip To Nebraska

My dad and his wife live in Lincoln and twice a year their area hosts a neighborhood garage sale.  I try to make the drive so that I can have a visit with him, visit my friend Cindy that lives close to him, go to the garage sales, and a no brainer...go to Valentino's Pizza.
This spring Katie was able to break away to go with me -- we are usually only gone for 24 hours.  We managed to fit in a lot of buying and eating into one trip.

We visited Cindy on Wednesday night.
Cindy works for an auction company/
has similar "junk taste" to mine /
picks some great junk for resale.
Three things I admire about her!
As if this isn't enough,
I admired her great display combining two
of my faves - an old window and old photos.

The photographs are of "adopted" family members.

We also drooled over this fantastic bird cage.
The red wall color really made it pop.

Katie showing off a few of her treasures.
She seemed to be drawn to a certain color...

My favorite purchase of the day.
A Simplicity Mannequin doll and
dress form from the 1940s.

She has such a beautiful, serene
expression.  Ebay bound.
I paid $8 for the doll, she sold for $49 on ebay.

PRETTY PASTEL Chimney Flue Covers

I'm taking another swipe at the all-white decorating trend.  Look at these colorful Victorian flue covers and try to stay true to your white-out ways.  The lithographed colors are so gorgeous.
Both heading to ebay soon -- seller Dmomma.

What a great May Day inspirational basket.
I had pink roses at my May wedding, so
it made my heart smile.

I think these Victorian lasses are smiling
because they think last night was the last
hard freeze of the spring and today
will be the last day to wear the pink coat.
Paid $10 for this, sold it on ebay for $23.

4.12.14 Saturdays Vintage Finds -- Fur & Feather Flea Market

We had a great weekend frenzy of buying. Which we needed in order to carry us over the Easter weekend.  Two vanloads that oozed at of the van and onto the roof both Friday and Saturday.

Most of it landed in my outdoor space --
outside of the Rusty Chandelier.
People like me, who love to blend junking and
gardening, are going crazy this time of year
picking up yard décor and garden accessories.

I managed to pick up FIVE piglet feeders.
They are so great as planters, hanging or sitting.
The egg crate is marked "Piggly Wiggly".

I have to give my husband credit for finding
all of the great rusty, wiry stuff in this photo.
The cream can is already sold.

This was my favorite find of the weekend.
I don't know if it was a birdbath or a planter --
either way it is 2die4.

Love the chippy paint.
Love the battered patina.

Love the leaf detailing on the legs.
Love, Love, Love.
It will be going inside the Rusty.

Mid-Century Board Games

How fun are these?  They definitely take me back to a simpler place and time.  I love the graphics on the boards and the boxes.  Soon to go on ebay.

1971 by Milton Bradley.  Be the first Partridge Family
member back to the bus to win the game.
(I had a crush on David Cassidy like everybody else.)

1962 by Milton Bradley.  This was a little before my time.
Wouldn't this be fun to play in a vintage airstream?

1967 -- I don't think I ever played this either but I plan on
remedying that tonight!

4.4.14 Fridays Vintage Finds

Got up early Friday morning to hit a couple garage sales, despite temperatures in the 30 degree range and wind.  Here are some of my finds:

The plain basket is already painted & price.
The cat head jar is scheduled to go on ebay.
I paid $13 for it and it brought $26 on ebay.

I wish the calico on the book had been in better condition.
Both books going on ebay.
Sewing cabinet is wood and begging for a coat of paint.

Awesome original milk paint on the firkin.
Wished they could have located the lid.
I paid $20 for the firkin, and it brought $83 on ebay.

My two favorite finds.  Decades old paint on the basket.
An intricately patterned quilt top in tip top condition.
Spent $25 for the quilt top, sold for $50 on ebay.
Gotta love garage sale season.

Stocking and Fluffing My Booth

I only have one (indoor) booth at an antiques / decorator mall.  It suffered some neglect during March while I held some stuff back for the Topeka Antique Show.  Time to show it some love this week.

I added the dripping lace header.
But looking at it now I think I'll take the branches off.
The Italian tole flower chandelier is already sold.

Cameras from last Saturdays sale in the only pool basket I have left
from the Topeka show.  I bought a bunch for $10 each,
and sold them for $24 each..

Took In my last two Easter baskets.
I added feedsack fabric to the handles.

What To Do With The Junking Leftovers?

During the average week of junking, items come into my possession that I don't want personally, and that I can't sell.  A big box marked $2 when you only want the one little thing.  A whole table full at an auction when you just wanted the one piece.  What to do with the leftovers?  Here is what I do with some of mine.

All of these earrings came with the Soviet Union earrings I wanted at the auction last Saturday.  I spent an evening putting them on cards to take to the Grace House in St Joseph.  This is the season when a lot of girls are getting their prom dresses there, and these would make great accessories.

I bid on a couple pieces of doll furniture and these baby dolls came with it.  I washed their clothes and cleaned them so some little girl could give them some love.

This is the baby clothes section of the Grace House.  The Grace House GIVES AWAY clothing, shoes, housewares and bedding to the needy in the
St. Joseph, Missouri community.

Old Photos: Pieces of the Past

There are those certain items.  We all have at least one.  It doesn't matter if they sell or not.  We have to bid on them.  They have to pass through our hands for a brief moment of time.  Maybe no one else seems to see their beauty, their history, their relevance to life today....

Okay, a bit dramatic.  But old photos call out to me.  They capture a moment of time so clearly.  And yet, we no longer know who they were.  Why it was an important time of their life.  What they did with their life.  Who they loved.  It only takes a generation or two to be lost and forgotten.

I feel like a late-on-the-scene caretaker.  I won't ever know who they were.  But I can respect that they were important in their lifetime.  That this photo was a piece of who they were.

Sometimes I display these newly "adopted" family members.  My ornate staircase is lined with them.  Sometimes I pass them on to others.  I get a weird satisfaction with being able to connect a vintage item to someone who will respect and treasure it.

These all came from last Saturdays auction.

I hope to help them find good homes.

Blue Hearts & The End Of My Blog

Early on during the corona virus, I did this project. When we put scalloped wood trim on the guest cottage door, we had some of the trim ...
